The Clement Theatre

1800 Clement St. | map |

Opened: Jack Tillmany shows an opening date of Friday December 23, 1910.  The location was the northwest corner of Clement and 19th Ave. The image is a detail from a May 1918 photo from the SFMTA Historic Photo Collections. Thanks to Jack for finding it on the SFMTA site.

An item from a May 1915 issue of Motion Picture News located by Jim Cassedy noted: "The Clement theatre in the Richmond district, San Francisco, is being overhauled and new projection equipment installed."

Closing: It closed c.1924 with that year being the last city directory listing. Jack comments: "Since it was 2 blocks from the newly (1923) built Alexandria, it's pretty obvious why it shut down."

Status: It's been demolished. There's now an apartment building on the site.

The full 1918 photo that the detail at the top of the page was taken from. We're looking west on Clement. Thanks to Bob Ristelhueber for finding the photo for a post on the BAHT Facebook page.

More information: The Clement is mentioned in Woody LaBounty's article "Palaces of the Past" on the Western Neighborhoods website.

Jack Tillmany's Arcadia Publishing book "Theatres of San Francisco" can be previewed on Google Books. It's available from Amazon or your local bookseller.
