The Jose Theatre

2362 Market St. | map |

Opened: 1912 on the north side of the street between Noe and Castro. This 1915 view by an unknown photographer appears on the Open SF History Project site. One film coming soon is "A Wild Ride," a July 1915 release.

The blog Eat Drink Films also featured the photo with the article "One Night Only! Come One, Come All to The Great Nickelodeon Show!" by Russell Merritt.

Closed: The building was converted into retail space in 1919. It was at one time used as an outlet by Phillips Tire Co. It was the headquarters of the AIDS Memorial Quilt Project from 1986 until 2001. The building has been designated San Francisco landmark #241.

Status: It was later a restaurant called Catch. They ended a 22 year run in 2024. Thanks to Jack Tillmany for spotting a nice segment about the restaurant and the history of the building from NBC Bay Area. It's on YouTube.

As of early 2024, no new tenant had been announced for the building.

Another photo appearing on Google's listing for the business.

More information: Cinema Treasures has a page on the Jose.

Jack Tillmany's Arcadia Publishing book "Theatres of San Francisco" can be previewed on Google Books. It's available from Amazon or your local bookseller.
