Eve Cinema / Adam Theatre / Fantasy Cinema

72 6th St. | map |

Opened: January 15, 1971 as the Eve Cinema. Thanks to Jack Tillmany for sharing this photo taken by Tom Gray that's in his collection. He notes: "And there's a parking place waiting for you right outside."

The location is on the west side of the street between Jessie St. and Mission St. It was renamed the Adam Theatre in November 1973. It was also advertised as the New Adam. Thanks to Jack for researching the dates.

It later became the Fantasy Cinema. Cinema Treasures contributor Seymour Cox comments:

"Mid-1977 saw the Adam Theatre's lavender storefront facade redone in a multicolor 'high tacky' motif, and the name had been changed to Fantasy Cinema."

Closing: 1977. Seymour notes:

"Near the end of that same year [1977] the concern folded. The cinema sat vacant for over a year with 'For Lease' posted across the small marquee. By early-‘79 the space was returned to retail use."

Status: The building survives, later with a variety of tenants. As of 2021 it was the home of Urban Alchemy.

A photo of the venue in its short career as the Adam. It's a 1973 or 1974 Tom Gray photo from the Jack Tillmany collection.

The building in 2021. That's the former theatre space behind the front pickup. We're looking north toward Jessie St. Photo: Google Maps
