It opened as The Hustler on July 29, 1971. The building was on the east side of the street between Pacific and Broadway. It was renamed The Cabaret in September 1973 and ran until July 1975. It became The City in December 1975. Thanks to Jack Tillmany for researching the dates.
An April 1977 photo by Tom Gray that's in the Jack Tillmany collection. Jack comments:
"It was a popular North Beach venue for live shows - restaurant - disco - you name it - another icon of a happier era - when people were more intent on just having a good time while the ever vigilant San Francisco Police force were paid to politely look the other way."
An October 1980 photo by Tom Gray. Thanks to Jack Tillmany for sharing this.
Closing: The date is unknown.
Status: The building has been demolished. There's a new one on the site.
