The New Columbia Theatre

Geary St. at Van Ness Ave. | map

This project was intended to be a replacement for the Columbia Theatre at 11 Powell St., a venue operated by Jake Gottlob and Melville Marx that was lost in the 1906 earthquake and fire.

Architects: Shea & Shea

Seating: It was to be a two balcony house seating nearly 2,000.

The lot was on the east side of Van Ness between Myrtle St. and Geary. The theatre was to be on the east end of the lot with an office building in front, facing Van Ness. The stage was to back up onto Geary St. The theatre entrance was envisioned as being at Van Ness and Myrtle with a long lobby heading east to the auditorium.

This announcement of the project appeared in the June 18, 1906 San Francisco Call. Thanks to Art Siegel for locating this via the California Digital Newspaper Collection website:

Opening: The project was never built.

Gottlob, Marx & Co. ended up, temporarily, at the quickly built Van Ness Theatre at Van Ness and Grove. It opened in March 1907 and closed in the Summer of 1910. Their next home was a new Columbia Theatre on Geary St. The venue opened in 1910 and is now called the Geary Theatre.
