The Basilone Theatre

680 Avenue I, Treasure Island | map |

An early view of the Basilone from the Jack Tillmany collection.

Jack comments:  "I suspect it was converted from one of the 1939-1940 Expo buildings after the fair closed, into the Post Theatre or Base Theatre (as they were usually called) when Treasure Island became a naval base soon afterwards, then renamed Basilone in honor of after the WWII death of John Basilone. He was a United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant who received the nation's highest military award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for heroism during the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II."

It was one of three theatres on the base. Prior to being renamed in 1945 it was known as Theatre 3.

Status: Still standing, but unused.

A 2005 lobby view of the abandoned theatre. It's a photo by Todd Lapin on Flickr.

A 2011 photo from T.H. Rogers on Cinema Treasures. Note we got a lobby added on to the original building.
