The Diamond Theatre

2786 Diamond St. | map |

Opened: This little gem in Glen Park opened as the Glenodeon in 1913. It was on the west side of the street a half block north of Chenery St.

It was renamed the Diamond Theatre in 1917. The 1923 photo of the theatre playing "Quincy Adams Sawyer" is from the Jack Tillmany collection. He notes that the film was a December 1922 release and certainly wouldn't be playing at theatres like the Diamond until 1923. A version of the photo in the San Francisco Public Library collection has a caption that notes that at the time the theatre was owned by a Mrs. Evers.

Seating: 300

Closing: It closed around 1929 or 1930, never running any sound films.

Status: The building it was in has been demolished.

More information: Jack Tillmany's Arcadia Publishing book "Theatres of San Francisco" can be previewed on Google Books. It's available from Amazon or your local bookseller.

The Diamond has a page on Cinema Treasures. Cinema Tour also has a page on it.
