The Gay Paree

122 6th St. | map |

Opened: July 1966. This South-of-Market venue was on the west side of the street, almost a block south of Mission St  Thanks to Jack Tillmany for doing the research and locating these four ads:

"For Non-Shockable Adults Only." The first ad appearing in the Examiner: July 21, 1966.

The Examiner ad for July 29, 1966.

The Examiner ad for May 18, 1967. Jack comments: "I included the Gayety Theatre ad just to show how competitive the market was at that time."

A world premiere! This was the ad for July 27, 1968.

A photo by Tom Gray that's from the Jack Tillmany collection. TJ Fisher did the research on the program that was playing and reports that this played from February 20 to 26, 1969. That building on the right still survives. In 2022 it was occupied by a laundromat.

The ad located by TJ Fisher for the week of February 20, 1969. He comments: "Continuous from 9:45 AM! I'm fairly 'unshockable' in the grand scheme of things, but I don't know about that time in the morning."

The Examiner ad on January 8, 1970. Thanks to Jack Tillmany for locating it.

Closing: 1974.

This item appeared in Jack Rosenbaum's column in the Examiner on May 3, 1974. We have no data on the later locations of the marquee. It's an item located by Jack Tilllmany.

Status: The building the Gay Paree was in has been demolished. The apartment building currently on the site at 6th and Minna dates from 1994.

More information: Jack Tillmany certainly hasn't given us the whole story about this venue. He notes: "Some of the ads I skipped were: 'A Visit to the Zoo,' 'Inter-Racial Love,' and 'Guess Who's Coming To Lunch."

Jack's Arcadia Publishing book "Theatres of San Francisco" can be previewed on Google Books. It's available from Amazon or your local bookseller.
