The Mini-Torium

502 Valencia St. | map |

Opened: Sometime around 1970. "Not the Biggest...But the Best." Thanks to Jack Tillmany for sharing this photo taken by Tom Gray. Jack notes that this was the "more extravagantly presented successor" to the original Mini-Torium on Market St.

This new location in the Mission district was on the west side of the street just south of 16th.

Gary Parks comments:

"You know, there’s almost enough visual content for me to rhapsodise about. You can see that the perpendicular sign is clearly an old 30s or 40s neon sign cabinet, pressed into service with only painted letters, and the Flintstone-y decorative border around the central poster case…why... downright opulent!

"And—note the way the entrance beneath the sign has those vertical stepped-in panels…downright DECO! Actually, that’s how they did the main entrance to the condos that now occupy the former parking lot of the Alexandra. I’m scintillating inside. But—seriously—once again, we have Tom to thank for bothering to capture these. Each has little smidgens of character."

Closing: Film historians have not yet determined the closing date.

Status: The Mini is long gone but the building survives on the southwest corner of Valencia and 16th.
