A 1929 view across the booth. That's the Brenograph nearest us. Note Vitaphone turntables behind three of the projectors. It's a photo in the San Francisco Public Library collection.

Projection throw: over 200'

Projection angle: 27 degrees

Original screen size for 1.37: 22' x 29." It had Magnascope capability.

Original equipment:

-- 4 Simplex projectors -- they were Standards as the Supers weren't out yet

-- Ashcraft lamps

-- Western Electric sound on 3 machines both for sound-on-film as well as sound-on-disc

-- a Master Brenograph dual effects projector

-- several followspots of unknown make

Projectionists George Woodruff and Ernie Hoffman in the booth on June 21, 1959. Thanks to Jack Tillmany for the photo. He notes that these men worked the Fox in 1929 and were still there 30 years later.

More booth information: If you're interested in how the building functioned technically, check out Bob Foreman's Vintage Theatre Catalogs article "San Francisco Fox (1929-1963) "The Last Word'." He has lots of data on PA systems, Movietone and stage lifts and more. Much of it is distilled from the Preston Kaufmann book "Fox: The Last Word." There are also fine comparisons with the other big Fox houses.
