The Star Theatre

554 Haight St. | map |

Opened: Sometime around 1910 as the Liberty Theatre. Jack Tillmany reports that the first telephone directory listing was June 1910 and the first city directory listing in the September 1910 edition. It was on the north side of the street between Fillmore and Steiner. Around 1914 it was being operated by a Mr. Happenkoss, who also had the Elite (now known as the Vogue) for awhile.

Seating: 1,200

It ran as the Colonial Theatre from c.1916 until 1920. It was the Star Theatre from 1920 until 1926. The c.1921 photo of the theatre as the Star is from the Jack Tillmany collection. He comments: "This is the only photo I've seen of it. 'The County Fair' is a September 1920 release, so probably had a bit of mileage on it by the time it reached the Star."

Closing: It closed in 1926 and was demolished for construction of the Riviera Theatre, a venue that was later renamed the Midtown.

More Information: Jack Tillmany's Arcadia Publishing book "Theatres of San Francisco" can be previewed on Google Books. It's available from Amazon or your local bookseller. Jack has the Star photo on page 89.
