The City Theatre

465 Post St. | map |

Opened: This theatre space in the Women's City Club building had been used for many productions since 1925. Jack Tillmany reports that the cornerstone was laid on May 14, 1925. The building was on the south side of the street between Powell and Mason.

The Players' Guild performed here after the Players' Club Theatre on Bush St. burned in December 1926. It was called the Lyric Theatre beginning May 6, 1960 with the opening of a production of "The Fall of the House of Usher."

Jack Tillmany notes that it became the City Theatre in 1968 with the opening of "The Odd Couple," a production running from May 3 until August 18.

Status: The building has been demolished. There's now an addition to the St. Francis Hotel on the site.

More information: Jack Tillmany's Arcadia Publishing book "Theatres of San Francisco" can be previewed on Google Books. It's available from Amazon or your local bookseller.
