The Palace Theatre

2315 Market St.  | map |

Opened: 1913. The location is on the south side of Market, forty five feet west of Noe. It didn't make it into the 1913 city directory. In the 1914 edition it is listed with two members of the Nasser family involved: William and Elias.

Architect: W. G. Hind. Drawings for the project are in the Gary Parks collection. See some images from them below. He comments:

"No architect box or notation is on the drawings, which were drastically trimmed down on the edges. It may have been there. My thanks to Gary Goss, who had the plans before I got them, for having noted the architect's name on the outside of the drawings. The plans were stamped by the Board of Public Works as approved, Sept. 22, 1913."

Seating: About 350

Closing: Perhaps in the mid-1920s. It was still running in 1923. It's listed in Paramount Week ads in 1922 and 1923.

Status: The building survives but has been remodeled for retail use downstairs with an added second floor for gym space.

Plans for the building from the Gary Parks collection:

A facade elevation for the not-yet-named theatre.

A section through the building.

A detail from the section showing the ticket lobby and booth.

A plan view. Gary comments: "Looking at the floorpan’s somewhat simplified depiction of seat rows, I come up with an estimate of 330 Seats."

A detail from the floorplan showing the lobby end of the building.

At the top it's roof truss details. In the center it's an elevation of the east wall. At the bottom it's a section through the west wall showing the framing, fireblocks and all.  Thanks, Gary!

More information: There isn't any yet.
