The Liberty Theatre

4200 18th St.  | map |

Opened: May 1908. This was reportedly the first theatre operated by the Nasser Bros. It was on the NW corner of 18th and Collingwood St. Collingwood is a block west of Castro.

The photo in the Jack Tillmany collection came from Steve Levin. The photo also puts in an appearance with "One Night Only! Come One Come All to the Great Nickelodeon Show," and article by Russell Merritt on the blog Eat Drink Films

The proprietors were called the "Nassu Bros." in their ad in the May 1, 1909 S.F. Bulletin. These ads were part of a three-page salute to "San Francisco's High-Class Moving-Picture Theatres" in the paper's Pacific Progress Issue. The Liberty was one of 30 theatres advertising in the section, which also included the long-winded articles "Education on Wheels - The Nickelodeon a Factor in Modern Civilization," "The Nickelodeon a Permanent Factor in Public Amusement" and "The 5-Cent Theater Opens Wide the Door of Pleasure to the Scanty Purse." Thanks to Art Siegel for locating this.

Closing: December 20, 1910 upon the opening of Nasser Bros. new Castro Street Theatre nearby. The building has been demolished.

More information: Jack Tillmany's Arcadia Publishing book "Theatres of San Francisco" can be previewed on Google Books. It's available from Amazon or your local bookseller.

Cinema Treasures has a page on the Liberty.
