The Eureka Theatre

452 Castro St. | map |

Opened: It was originally called the Castro Nickelodeon and, according to Jack Tillmany, was in operation as early as September 1909. He notes that it was listed in the September 1910 city directory.

The theatre is on the right in this 1911 view south on Castro St. from the SFMTA Historic Photo Collection. It's identified as photo #3117. The photo also makes an appearance on the blog San Francisco Pictures. The Castro Street Theatre at 485 Castro is just out of the frame on the left. It opened in 1910.

A detail from the 1911 photo.

It probably was renamed the Eureka when the Castro Street Theatre opened across the street in December 1910. The theatre is listed as the Eureka in the September 1911 telephone directory.

Closing: Evidently it closed in 1911 or 1912. As Jack says: "Apparently, it couldn't compete with its new neighbor."

More information: Jack Tillmany's Arcadia Publishing book "Theatres of San Francisco" can be previewed on Google Books. It's available from Amazon or your local bookseller.
